New Horizons

Over the last 8 months I don't think my feet have hardly touched the ground. It's been a really busy time planning, teaching, performing and studying for my PGCHE

There's been some really amazing projects happening, setting up new partnerships with The Cornwall Film Festival for On The Wire (more about that in a while), Freefall Dance held the second summer school which was a great success in partnership with University College Falmouth and The Works, and I've been touring with Cscape's children's show!

After some time to pause for a second and let the dust settle on the sweat and hard work of this last year there's some really exciting projects bubbling away that will be happening over the Autumn. I've listed them below, to remind myself that life in Cornwall is busy, creative and although a long way from the big smoke and cities there are some amazing people, projects, facilities, ambition and drive that I'm privileged to be a part of.

On The Wire -

Dance and Art Event

Tickets now on sale: BOOK

This unique event is a showcase, an eclectic, curated evening of high quality multidisciplinary work including dance, visual art, photography and film. Kicking off with a selection of short dance films in partnership with the Cornwall Film Festival, each evening will then showcase live dance performances from regional and nationally touring dancers and an exhibition of artwork, stills photography and film in the gallery.

At its heart is a passion for creating an inspiring and celebratory evening of professional and emerging artist work, promoting and exposing a cultural feast for audiences of any age and any experience of the arts.

We have a new WEBSITE! Check it out for featured artists information, the people that make the project tick and for up to date info about artists performing and exhibiting work this year.

Freefall Dance -

Summer schools, new weekly classes and performances

This year we ran two summer schools, a three day 'Young Performers' summer school called FUEL, and a four day professional development summer school. We had visiting artists Ben Wright (bgroup), James Finnemore (Hofesh Shechter), Caroline Lofthouse (Yael Flexor) and Annie Lok (Siobhan Davies) delivering technique classes and creative workshops. The 'Business Skills' sessions to support independent practitioners that ran at the start of each day were a big hit. We sold out and had some truly fantastic feedback and are now in the planning stages at the moment for 2013.

Our weekly classes are back up and running in Falmouth. For further details please visit our website which has all of the dates, venues and prices.

We are also choreographing a piece to be performed at The Acorn Theatre, Penzance on Saturday 3rd November as part of a youth and community platform organised by Helen Tiplady (Cscape). There's still places left so if you're interested please contact us via our email address.

Cscape -

If The Shoe Fits

(e) info@cscape.org.uk

Written by Anna Maria Murphy, Directed by Simon Harvey (both Kneehigh Theatre) and Designed by John Keys this is a delightfully interactive show for children and adults alike. Join Cscape and jump feet first into a very special kind of shoe shop!

'If the Shoe Fits’ is a 55 minute theatre show created for children aged 3 and above. The show transports children into the magical world of a very special kind of shoe shop, where every box contains it’s own special story. The performers bring the shoes and their stories to life using physical theatre, dance, story-telling and music, creating a delightful visual world that engages children in tales of new shoes, old shoes, shoes with laces and velcro, and even a re-telling of the Emperors new…shoes!

Kick Starting 2012

After an amazing 2011, and a lovely relaxing Christmas break the new year kicks off with some exciting projects and performances, which I can't wait to start working on.

This week I'll be working on Cscape's new children's show 'If the Shoe Fits' which is being directed by Simon Harvey (Kneehigh, o-region) and written by Anna-Maria Murphy (Kneehigh, BBC Radio 4). It's a developmental week with a scratch performance at The Acorn Theatre, Penzance on Saturday 6th at 2pm. The show is aimed at children aged 3-7yrs and their families.

Freefall Dance Classes start back this Monday, me and Grace are really looking forwards to a new year, a new set of classes and to start moving again after the break. We are running our Monday evening Open Level class as normal, and we have a NEW 'Body Con and Stretch' class on Thursday evenings. We'll also be running a series of Advanced Level workshops in Cornwall and Plymouth this term, which we'll be posting more information about soon.

Please follow this link to our Freefall Dance newsletter with all details of times, dates, venues and prices. You can also sign up to the newsletter to receive regular updates about our work via the link:

'Ways Of Watching' - Winter Dance Symposium - University College Falmouth.
On January 26th we will be performing a scratch performance of 'Effete' as part of the one day event alongside other scratch performances and panel discussions exploring issues around how we watch dance. 'Effete' is a professional work in progress originally created as part of  The Development Project which took place last September. The piece is choreographed by myself in collaboration with dancers Robert Mennear and Grace Sellwood, with original music by Sophy Smith (Motionhouse, Assault Events).
